Big Band
Features prominent saxophones, trumpets and trombones with a very defined rhythm section, and usually played with a large band (hence the name). The brass section carries the tune (often in lieu of a vocalist), but may serve as the carrier of the singer's voice. The rhythm section keeps an underlying beat, as this was an early form of popular dance music. A guitar and bass may also be featured.
Example Artists: Glenn Miller And His Orchestra, Duke Ellington
Bop
Uptempo, improvisational form of jazz that emerged as an offshoot of Swing in the 1940's. Served as an antithesis to the Swing / Big Band sound that was popular at the time by focusing on harmonies instead of melodies. Features complex chord progressions and freeform improvisation.
Also known as "bebop."
Example Artists: Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker
