Draft FAQ for Music People

"Music People" being artists, label owners, or anyone else more closely involved with the music industry

Mind you, this is a sarcastic attempt to educate the high and mighty. If we really want to implement this, we can make it less snarky and more serious. And for reference, this whole thing arose from hmvh’s post found here. Currently, this is a half-assed attempt to record the general thoughts and ideas from others, all in one organized location. Future versions will shine like the sun, or at least like well-polished pewter.

1Q- Why am I associated with Happy Hardcore? I am Unique, but my name isn’t Darren Mew!

1A- As Discogs is a world-wide database spanning all types of recorded audio, cataloging artists and labels from all periods of recorded music, the chance that someone else used your stage name is fairly high. To differentiate between these artists with the same names, numbers in parenthesis are added to the end of the duplicate artist names, increasing sequentially. For example, there are over 20 "Unique" artists.

2Q- My profile is a lie! I’m more than a rapper, and I was never in Group X!

2A- Profiles are often updated over time, from information found on albums and singles, as well as from the internet and magazines. Sometimes facts are inferred from credits. You are free to submit an update to your profile, but keep it objective and professional. No silly voices, or talking about being the greatest artist alive.

3Q- Why didn’t you filthy mongrels update my profile yet? I am Almighty Whitey!

3A- All submissions, from new releases to updates and release comments, are reviewed by volunteer moderators and editors, working to review everyone else’s work, too. Patience is required here.

4Q- Why are you questioning me, you idjuts? Why are you so dumb, I know everything about me!

4A- We want to be sure you are placing the credits properly, and wondering why you deleted everyone else from the credits. If you remove credits, we’d like to know why. We haven’t gotten our mind-reading kits in the mail yet.

5Q- I broke up with Mr. Spandex last year, so I want to delete Mr. Spandex from all Papa Bear and Mr. Spandex releases. Why can't I?

5A- Discogs is catalogs things as they happened, not as you want them to be. We do not help revise your shady history.

6Q- I just made that mash-up of Queen and New Kids On The Block as a laugh. Why can't I delete that release, or at least my involvement with it? I don't want to get sued!

6A- see 5A. To expand, you shouldn't use your name where you don't want to be credited; you could always remain anonymous and hide behind new stage names. If there are no actual credits linking you to a particular release and the details are based on hypothesis or internet rumors, then you can state "it is rumored that Mr Amazing is the artist behind the trashy and tragic New Queens On The Block mashup."

7Q- The picture(s) on my profile are dumb/ ugly/ old/ copyrighted!

7A- You are free to request that the images are deleted, but the reasoning needs to be decent. Most would be fine with deleting dumb, ugly, or copyrighted images, but old images are good reference if someone wants to know what you used to look like. Keep in mind the image guidelines.

8Q- I never released my album on Bootleggers Paradise! That is an illegal release! Delete it now!

8A- Discogs has the Unofficial and Partially Unofficial tags to mark some releases as not being wholly legal. Some countries have different copyright laws, and some releases are blatant bootlegs, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be cataloged. If something wasn't cleared for release, please update that particular album/ single/ whatnot with Unofficial or Partially Unofficial, whichever is fitting, and provide reasoning for your actions in the moderator notes and/or release notes. Do NOT attempt to delete the release, as the delete request will be denied.

9Q- I never gave permission for my track to appear on Best Of Beach Bunny Beats Vol II! Pay me now for this!

9A- If you didn't give permission for your track(s) to appear on a compilation, please submit an update for that particular release and mark it as Partially Unofficial, and add release notes about which track(s) were not cleared for redistribution. Discogs is only a cataloging site and is not affiliated with any labels, and as such, is not in the position to pay you for any monies owed.
