PLEASE NOTE!

THIS IS WORK IN PROGRESS. IT IS ALSO NOT CURRENT. NONE OF THIS IS OFFICIAL, OR GUARANTEED TO HAPPEN! It may also be out of date and needing revised to meet current guidelines, methods, and thinking!

Once again I have to request that you add -- at bare minimum -- the country of release for each entry on the Artist page. Many of the artists I collect might have a half-dozen or more different releases with the same title, format, label and year -- particularly for singles, where you have multiple issues with significantly different contents (UK CD1, UK CD2, US CD, German CD, etc.). Finding a particular release in the listing is currently a major pain in the ass.

With an eye to dealing with the issues in http://help.discogs.com/ticket/1466, this is an outline of proposed changes to the way the artist pages are organized. The issues are display issues only, and so don't affect the way information is entered. This means that it is easy to tweak the changes to optimize the display, although ideally we would try to get it right first time.

* All self-credits should be either listed separately from other credits or marked out by using the following rule: IF the artist name on the main artist credit = the artist name on any other credit on that release (there are exceptions, see [#artist_page_headings below]), THEN list in a separate section on the Artists Page Heading. For example, the Production heading will also have a Self-Production heading for releases that agree with the above rule.

* For the purposes of defining self-credits, 'Artist' includes any Alias, AKA, or In Groups.

* Where credits are rolled into one Artists Page Heading (for example the proposed Instruments and Vocals), the list should contain the first 25 characters of the actual credit/s given on the release, for example on this artist page http://www.discogs.com/artist/Klaus Roeder would have:

'Instruments and Vocals' (replaces Appears On for indexed musical credits):

[/release/15159 Autobahn] (LP)

[/label/Philips Philips]

1974 Violin, Guitar

[/release/36984 Autobahn] (LP)

[/label/Vertigo Vertigo]

1974

Guitar, Violin

* Combined credits are always dealt with separately.

* Introduce named anchors for Artists Page Headings, for example http://www.discogs.com/artist/Klaus Roeder#instruments_and_vocals

* "Artists Page Heading" refers to the headings such as 'Remixes', 'Production', 'Appears On' etc on any artist page. Some of these will stay the same, and some will change in this update. The following is a proposed list for how these will change, and the proposed new groupings (for example Instruments and Vocals). All current credits listed at http://help.discogs.com/wiki/SubmissionGuidelinesCreditList will be indexed and included in this update.

* The mechanics of the display of these credits is not dealt with here, but some options are: a) keep the display as it is i.e. one big list, b) hide some of the list (for example Technical credits), and have a link to another page, c) hide some of the list, and display them using HTML once an icon is clicked, d) hide some of the list, and display them using AJAX (the same method as used for the new submission form) dynamically on the same page. Although this can be changed later, it will be advantageous to discuss the merits of each and decide on which to use before the changes are coded by teo.

The following are two credit lists that are derived from http://help.discogs.com/wiki/SubmissionGuidelinesCreditList to help illustrate the groupings for the proposed new artists page headings. The instruments are in a separate list for clarity. The artist page headings are as broad as possible. There may be some tweaks to do to this list, some credits are hard to place. Specifically, 'Compilation Producer' under 'Production', 'Programmed By' under 'Writing and Arrangement', and 'Compiled By' under 'Writing and Arrangement' are probably all contentious, there may be better ideas for headings to place these under. It could also be argued that all the credits under technical are really part of the production process, and should just go under 'Production' (using production in the broad sense e.g. making a product).
