Talk:Splitting Artists and adding aliasses proposal

I really like this propsal, it will solve a lot of the todays problems and wishes around the use of alias', collaboration artists and finally show really all releases an artist was involved in. Nice one.

There are just two things I'd like to discuss:

1. I don't think it's a really good idea to combine the artists already at the release level. Reasons:
- The release form will get even more crowded than today
- Think of the main artists per track, if you apply the same combination possibilites as or the main release artists there's probably not enough space left
- Create/change/delete of such a collaboration group will always need work at release level and tons of votes
- If you detect such a collaboration you need to go through all the release where these artist are not combined. Not easy to find them and then you have to update all releases where the combination is missing

That's why I propose to add the collaboration feature at the artist page, not at the release level. The system is able to search for the combinations itself, this doesn't need to be done by the user.

2. I'm thinking on how to treat groups like Crosby, Sills, Nash and Young. There's already the group Crosby, Sills and Nash, should the collaboration artist Crosby, Sills and Nash be a part of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young or just the individual artists? And if the system is searching for the releases itself, how do we avoid that David Crosby is credited three times for a release of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young?
Probably it would be correct to add individual members of Crosby, Stills and Nash as a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young instead of the collaboration goup Crosby, Stills and Nash. So the system will search just releases where all four are credited.
As said before, I really like this propsal, good work, covers many of my ideas :)

It sounds good, but…

Rassel, did you notice that this proposal seems to be already PRETTY old…? :)

Anyway, thanks for "re-discovering" it. cheers

Yes, I know, loukash, but nik himself pointed to this proposal last week. So even if it's pretty old it's still a good proposal overall and with the "semi-automatic" query of the existing collaboration group I added would be a big relief.
