Headings In-depth
Releases
A release will only be displayed in one of the following categories. Master releases are only displayed in one category as well, using the same hierarchy (so if there are 2 release in a MR, an EP and a Mini-Album, then we use the Mini-Album tag, and list it in the album section).
The hierarchy is:
Where artist = main artist:
- DJ Mixes (IF Credited artist for 'DJ Mix' = credited Main Artist, then list in the artists DJ Mixes section)
- Compilations (release is tagged as Compilation)
- Album (release is tagged as Album or Mini-Album)
- Singles & EPs (release is tagged as Single, Maxi-Single, or EP)
- Uncategorized (release doesn't fit into any of the above)
Where artist = track artist:
- Tracks Appear On - for all appearances on other releases (NOTE - should this be split into the same categories as for main artist?)

Credits
The credits section will list all credited instances. A release can appear in more than one section.
For example, if an artist is credited for Vocals and Production on one release, the release will appear once under the Vocal section, and once under the Production section.
A release should obviously not appear twice in the same section. For example, if an artist was credited for Vocals and Rap on the same release, that would only be one listing in the 'Vocal section.
The credit sections are directly derived from the 'Heading' column on the credit page at [1]
Where artist = credited artist:
- Vocal
- Instruments
- Writing and Arrangement
- Featuring & Presenting
- Conducting & Leading
- Production
- Remix
- DJ Mix
- Technical
- Non-Musical

Assuming Categories (album, single etc) For Untagged Releases
Many releases are not tagged as 'Album', 'Single' etc, due to our reasonably strict guidelines for data entry. However, for this new artist page display, we should make assumptions regarding the right category a release fits into in order to provide a tidy and logical display, and avoid anyone updating tags unnecessarily.
To that end, if there is no (Album, Mini-album, EP, Maxi-Single, Single, Compilation) tag, we can make the following assumptions:
- LP's get listed in the albums section
- Vinyl 7" with 2 or less tracks gets listed in the singles section
- Vinyl 12" with 3 or less tracks gets listed in the singles section
- Vinyl 12" with more than 3 tracks gets listed in the EP section
- CD, Mini with 3 or less tracks gets listed in the singles section
- CD, Mini with 4 or more tracks gets listed in the EP section
- CD with 7 or more tracks gets listed in the Albums section
- file based releases ?
This list is not complete - it may be too specific, and there will be further assumptions we can add.
All other releases can be listed in the 'Uncategorized' section.
Will we need a new 'Uncategorized' format tag for releases that end up appearing in one or other of the sections, but for whatever reason don't fit in there?
Adding New Credits / Reindexing etc
Can we automatically index any new credits added under the Headings at [2] ?
Can we build a new system to make adding credits more open?
Can any new credit not listed there can be assumed to be an instrument unless updated otherwise?
Ideas / Discussion Points
- illustration icons to indicate the type of role? for Writer (treble clef), Vocalist (head with voice bubble, Producer (VU meters), etc... http://www.discogs.com/help/forums/topic/198073#2479963
- Can we separate out videos? Can we parse the existing data for this, or do we need a new tag for videos, as some formats are possibly ambiguous (MPEG4, DVD-Data etc). http://www.discogs.com/help/forums/topic/198073#2479675
- Can we provide stats, for example, list the top 3 or top 5 of most used credit roles http://www.discogs.com/help/forums/topic/198073#2479266
